Decorative Moroccan mirrors

You might wonder where the richness of the many decorative motifs on these impressive Moroccan mirrors comes from. The urge to decorate utensils and ornaments has always existed in Eastern cultures, so also among the Arab peoples. Thus, in the Middle East and North Africa, an entirely unique artistic style of decoration developed, inspired mainly by shapes from nature and the universe. And we find these frequently in the wall mirror.

Oriental mirror inspiration from Arabic architecture

We find the typical Oriental style, for example, in a Moroccan wall mirror made of gold or a black Oriental mirror, the frame of which, made of brass or wrought iron, is decorated with tight geometric or organic motifs. We then think of leaf ornaments, or shapes inspired by Arabic calligraphy and also widely used within Arabic architecture for palaces. The shape of the frame itself is also often inspired by Arabic architecture. The inner edge in arch or pointed arch shape with protrusions is seen in door and window openings of palaces. We often see this processing very nicely in the large mirrors. If you then place such a large Moroccan mirror in the hall in the size of a passport mirror and look at yourself in it, you can easily imagine yourself in a totally different world. Or else try an elongated mirror, which will give your wardrobe a whole new character.

One thing is certain, a mirror is not just a functional mirror but will always be decorated in one way or another. This does not just involve calligraphy or leaf motifs. What is also common is the repetition of simple shapes applied with careful precision. Moroccan mirrors also often come in a set of three or more small mirrors. Such a Moroccan mirror always has a special shape such as a drop, or a moon, or oval, or some other closed shape and is neatly finished with a gold or silver border. A mirror set consists of several mirrors in the same shape. These run from small to large and look particularly decorative in a hallway or corridor.
